From a Leaking Roof to a Digital Bridge
I am Macdonald Lehlohonolo Hlalele, but my community in Nellmapius and Mamelodi East knows me as Macdee.
My journey with technology didn’t start in a lab or a fancy school. It started in an informal settlement without electricity, water, or sanitation. I matriculated without ever touching a computer, yet I spent my nights dreaming of developing games and systems. I knew then what I know now:
Poverty is not a lack of talent; it is a lack of access.
The Resilience of a Self-Taught Leader
After a heartbreaking start of dropping out of a Computer Science degree because I simply didn’t have the resources to stay in the race, I didn’t give up. I worked odd jobs. I felt the hunger. I lived under the leaking roofs.
But I chose to turn that hardship into resilience.
I taught myself the tools of the modern world. From the Adobe Creative Suite and WordPress Development to the complex art of navigating South African government systems, I turned myself into a “moving library.” I realized that if I could teach myself to install operating systems and build brands, I could teach my community to do the same.
Why I Built ApplyOnlineSA
I have seen how the lack of information drives our youth toward drugs and crime. I have seen how politics often fails to put food on the table. So, I took my BCom in Marketing Management from UNISA and my 15 years of “on-the-ground” experience at my Nellmapius Internet Café to create this platform.
ApplyOnlineSA is the bridge. It is where my technical skills meet my heart for the people. I don’t just list jobs or grants; I demystify them. I identify the scams that prey on the desperate. I provide professional digital services (CVs, SARS, CIPC) that I’ve spent a decade perfecting.

My Legacy: Each One, Teach One
I have already mentored young people from my café who are now running tourism businesses or working in corporate insurance. My goal is to keep this fire burning.
When you use ApplyOnlineSA, you aren’t just using a website. You are tapping into a decade of struggle, a lifetime of learning, and a deep commitment to making sure that no child in an informal settlement ever has to “shatter their dreams” because they don’t have a login or a scan.
“Information is only powerful when it is accessible. My goal with ApplyOnlineSA is to take my 15 years of research experience and put it directly into the hands of every South African who is ready to take their next step.” — Macdee
